so first from Wellness Resources we're
going to talk about OIC and this is OIC
side effects include pancreatitis
stomach paralysis and thyroid cancer now
before we dive into the article I'm
going to play a clip because it's one
thing to talk about the article and kind
of go through it but I want you to see
what's out there in the news and I want
you to see exactly how people are
talking about it and um you know because
it's again it's all the rage it's it's
mainstream and all this so take a look
at what they're talking about when it
comes to OIC and these types of uh you
know weight loss drugs and what they
call they're kind of like you know
Miracle weight loss drugs or whatever
the case may be and um and you know for
those of you who are listening you know
you'll be able to kind of understand
what's going on but um check this out so
you can kind of get a sense of what's
going on out
there these days it's the talk of Tik
Tok I just start dropping pounds left
and right the topic OIC has over 300
million views being on this medication
has helped me tremendously with my
health with scores of users crediting
the drug for their weight loss success
OIC is a drug you inject that's meant to
improve blood sugar and help manage type
2 diabetes but because one of the side
effects is weight loss many are using it
off label a trend that may have started
in Hollywood talk show host Andy Cohen
even recently tweeting everyone is
suddenly showing up 25 lbs lighter what
happens when they stop taking OIC since
oic's gone viral on social media some
doctors like Nancy Rama say they've been
flooded with inquiries it's become
something very hot and heavy in Los
Angeles Beverly Hills oic's active
ingredient seatide works by making you
feel full longer doctors say it's
similar to wovi which has been approved
for weight loss by the FDA and is
produced by the same manufacturer Novo
Nordisk when we ask the company about
people using OIC to lose weight it
responded in a statement writing in part
we do not promote suggest or encourage
off-label use of our medicines the
company adding OIC and wovi are not
interchangeable however the FDA tells
NBC News healthc Care Professionals can
choose to prescribe drugs off label when
medically appropriate Anna M has
documented her 45lb weight loss Journey
with OIC on YouTube interestingly enough
it has been my easiest weight loss
attempt and my most successful she
agrees that OIC isn't a magic pill
adding her side effects have included
headaches and fatigue a price some may
be willing to pay for weight
loss and that's the issue right the the
the price that some are willing to pay
for weight loss that's really the issue
and part of the reason why this whole
culture
exists is well there's a I mean there's
a many reasons for it but of course you
know they're marketing a drug they're
marketing something they can sell makes
sense but there's also Public Health
officials out there who are saying
things you know on TV and and this type
of thing who kind of add to this and
people see this and then they think well
yeah that makes sense right so take a
look at this and I I I played this once
before but let's see if you remember
these
comments if you diet you lose weight
right the number one cause of obesity is
genetics that means if you are born to
parents that have obesity you have a 50
to 85% likelihood of having the disease
yourself even with optimal diet exercise
sleep management Stress Management so
when people see families that have
obesity the assumption is what are they
feeding those
kids and that's part of the reason why
this is the message that our health
officials out there our our Public
Health officials and our scientists and
this is what they're this is what
they're selling this is what they're
talking about okay and this is part of
the reason why people are getting this
message and then running every time they
see something you know shiny and new
without thinking about the consequence
now again that's it is what it is now
that was Dr Fatima Cody right who is a
person who who's you know pretty high as
far as public health she's a Stanford
Graduate she's a scientist and she's
basically a um an obesity
expert and I that was a clip from 60
minutes if I remember correctly and that
is but this is what it is this is what
they're actually promoting this is
basically what they're saying is don't
worry about it it's a disease it's not
your fault diet and exercise have
nothing to do with it if you're o obese
don't worry we can fix that we have
something for you and it's sad it's sad
because people buy into this and then
this is those are the folks that run and
get you know the oics and and and all
these types of things and um and then
who knows where they end up with it
whether it's side effects or not but
they see the weight dropping pretty
quick and um and there you go so this is
what's going on out there you know so
obviously you know everybody got has to
be aware of this stuff so let's let's
dive into OIC and these types of drugs
directly from the article okay so OIC
basically is a once- a week injection
approved by the FDA in
2017 and it was it was approved
initially to treat type two diabetes
okay and it's not currently just and
again it's not currently
approved by the FDA for weight loss it's
a side effect it's a side effect that's
what's interesting right it's the side
effect is weight loss okay so again
oic's main ingredient is seatide right
or some people say semaglutide okay but
what it does is it activates What's
called the
glp1 receptor now the idea for The gp1
Agonist uh Agonist drugs which which
this is stems from a it was a Canadian
researcher in 1984 that was
studying uh these these was studying the
the use of lizard Venom actually from
the what's called a key monster okay
it's like kind of like a big giant
lizard and this reptile basically can
slow down it its metabolism and sustain
blood sugar levels due to a hormone
called extendin four okay so basically
what this did is it spurred This
research to develop a drug that kind of
mirrors what that does in this this
lizard and that's kind of how that
started now the prescriptions for OIC
and similar DRS have skyrocketed to 9
million in 2023 9 million so that's
that's a lot okay so let's talk about
glp1 first because it is a hormone okay
and let's talk about exactly what the
hormone does now glp just so you know it
stands for gluc glucagon like peptide
okay and it was basically discovered
when they were looking at uh you know
these receptors in the pancreas and
these different hormones in the pancreas
and they were they were discovering what
it does and they they kind of discovered
this
glp1 and exactly how it affects and and
acts similar to glucagon now we know
glucagon in your system if you know
anything about how that works glucagon
is kind of the companion hormone to
insulin basically insulin what is
insulin do right so when you take in
Sugar insulin is secreted by your
pancreas and basically takes the sugar
out of your bloodstream right and kind
of puts it on kind of as a carrier and
basically distribut it to where it needs
to go it goes into your cells it goes
into your muscular Skittle system it
goes into your brain it gets put into
the fat if has nowhere else to go that
type of thing so you know insulin is
kind of like the taxi cab driving around
the passengers okay so you know that's
what it does okay now glucagon is a
little bit of has a little bit of a
different mechanism because when your
blood sugar goes down and we're talking
about when you start when you start to
experience a little more of a
hypoglycemia meaning your blood sugar
goes way down and you'll notice let's
say you haven't eaten in a long time you
you're more sensitive you your blood
sugar goes way down you start getting
laded you start feeling woozy right your
blood sugar go that means that your
blood sugar's you know going down well
typically what glucagon is supposed to
do is supposed to get secreted between
your meal or between those times go into
your liver knock on the door of your
liver basically and tell your liver to
release the stored blood sugar that
that's called glycogen in there and
release it turn it into glucose and
basically keep your head awake okay and
historically that's what it does right
that's typically how it's Works since
the an Our Ancestors right because
remember our ancestor has our ancestors
had to keep their head awake because
they didn't get three or four square
meals a day so the body Evol you know
through Evolution has worked that way
right well now we we're so metabolically
unhealthy in society that all these
hormones are completely out of whack and
this is where we start to get problems
this is where we start to get obesity
problems hypoglycemia hyperglycemia
diabetes all these types of things
because we are just metabolically
inflexible okay
so and again that's just kind of a
little bit of the backstory but let's
talk about gp1 hormone so in humans the
gp1 is a natural hormone produced and
secreted by the Endocrine cells in your
small intestine okay and one of the
things it does it basically enters your
brain upon eating food okay and it has
several functions in uh in the body okay
it causes your pancreas to release
insulin okay that's one it's a good
thing it does it blocks glucagon okay it
actually blocks glucagon when when that
raise you know which is again what
raises the uh blood sugars when your
when the your blood sugar runs low so it
blocks glucagon now okay keep that in
mind okay now glp1 also slows the
gastric emptying causing slower
digestion and this is the big one this
is the big one because it actually slow
it causes a slowing down of the
digestive process and why is that
important because of
satiety because remember it takes you
what 15 to 20 minutes to feel the full
signal when you're eating well if you
are eating slow if you if you have a
slow slower effect of gastric emptying
into the digestive system okay you're
going to start to feel a little more
Sati you're going to start to feel full
uh for a longer period of time digestion
is going to slow now this is something
that I've talked about that you know
fiber helps to do as well okay but also
the gp1 signals areas in your brain that
process hunger and satiety so this is
what gp1 does in your in your body just
normally as a as a normal hormone okay
now the differences is the gp1 naturally
produced in your body has a half life of
about one to two minutes okay so it and
it stays in your system for about 5
minutes now each injection of synthetic
glp1 okay CU remember
this is what this is what these oics and
these types of things are right they're
injections these injections of the glp1
semaglutide stays in your system for
five weeks what could possibly go wrong
five weeks okay so this is why you're
starting to get weight loss right you
start to get weight loss why because
basically when you look when you drill
down to it and the mechanism
is is that you're feeling full longer
you're feeling you're not eating as much
right and therefore you're starting to
get you're starting to get weight loss
okay this is this is part of that whole
mechanism and this was again this was a
side effect of using these drugs for
diabetics because what these what these
drugs do really was were designed to
control your diabetes right we're to
control your insulin levels and these
type of things which is not a bad thing
but the issue is now where
actually causing the body to lose weight
now is that a good or a bad thing we'll
talk about that but let's move on now
wovi which which was is a more potent
version of OIC okay and that was
designed for weight loss and that was
actually that was actually introduced
nfda proofed for weight loss okay and
that was in 2021 way GOI isn't approved
for individuals with a body mass index
of at least 30 it it is also approved
for use in individuals with a BMI of at
least 27 and a medical condition uh
related to weight uh you know related to
weight like cholesterol diabetes and
high blood pressure the FDA just
approved wovi as the first weight loss
medication to help prevent heart heart
stroke and cardiovascular events in
adults with cardiovascular disease and
other obesity or overweight issues okay
so they're all in on wovi so we'll move
on so let's talk a little bit
about why this could be a problem okay
and I'm going to address it first and
it's not from this article but I'm going
to address something that this article
actually doesn't mention but what people
are seeing in um and what studies are
seeing in these people that have lost
weight on these
medications when they've looked at dexa
scans from a lot of these people who
have lost weight on these drugs yes
they've lost weight but they're also
losing money muscle at the same rate
that's a problem that's a problem
because we all know right muscle mass
and muscle loss as you get older
sarcopenia is a major problem because
now you are leading to metabolic
problems if you are losing muscle as you
get older that's causing a whole range
of problems because that's going to make
you more susceptible overall to insulin
resistance in general but it's also
going to make you susceptible to a lot
of other things including including
falling balance issues breaking you know
breaking bones and these types things
things that you don't want to happen as
you get older as you become you know uh
especially after 60s and 70s and that
type of thing so the more muscle mass
you have into your older ages the better
off you are going to be metabolically
flexible and I've talked about it a lot
on this show you must maintain your
muscle mass as you get older and it's
even more imperative that as you lose
weight if you are obese or just
overweight that you maintain that muscle
mass as you lose weight because again
you can lose them both and what they're
seeing in the dexas scans is that people
are losing both that's a problem okay so
that's just
my research on this as well again
they're going to do more studies on this
but I have a
feeling that this is part of the problem
so now let's go you know let's dive a
little bit deeper into the
um side effects okay of these things so
pancreatitis diabetic retinopathy kidney
disease okay so some of the FDA warnings
and precautions include pancreatitis
which is inflammation of the pancreas
right okay diabetic retinopathy
complications Vision vision changes due
to blindness severe hypoglycemia acute
kidney injury and worsening of you know
chronic kidney disease which may require
Dialysis in some cases and acute
gallbladder
disease also they've noticed sweating
confusion uh drowsiness headaches slurge
speech fast heartbeat anxiety
irritability mood changes weakness and
feeling jittery okay again things to
keep in the back of your mind when it
comes to this these are all warnings by
the way
also thyroid cancer warnings OIC or
semaglutide also carries a boxed warning
that it may cause thyroid cancer animal
studies showed that OIC caused increased
incident of meary thyroid cancer that
has not been proven in humans so again
this is animal studies so obviously you
know you have to take that for what it
is but it's something to take a look at
because a lot of animal studies that
they do they make sure that the animals
are as you know as close to humans as
possible Right their their environment
and and that type of thing so I'm sure
eventually hope they'll do some more
studies on humans on this next stomach
paralysis and intestinal blockages so in
SE September 2023 the FDA added a
warning for intestinal blockage
intestinal obstruction and
ilas uh where the intestine stopped
working properly and I talked about this
on a previous podcast this was one of
the big things that came out especially
there were people a lot of people in
Europe who were taking this that were
experiencing that and I think that's
where it started actually that's where
the first the first complaints were
happening I think it was somewhere in
Europe I don't remember exactly where
but anyway in 2023 October the American
Medical Association uh published a
research letter on the further Evidence
or further ad uh Adverse Events uh
warning about OIC serious serious side
effects in patients with diabetes
research studies have found higher risk
of gallbladder liver and bile duct
disease okay they also found
inflammation of the pancreas again
pancreatitis bowel obstruction and
gastroparesis which is a shutdown of
gastric movement again paralysis right
literally the the um your
gastrointestinal system just completely
just stops you know paralysis basically
okay so it it this is a serious
condition okay because you literally
you're not going to be able to absorb
food so something to take a look at now
at its worst food can sit in your
stomach undigested for hours you know
putrifying and bowels shut down with
extreme complication if you end up with
this paralysis okay so and this is where
the symptoms the symptoms could be so
bad that you can require hospitalization
okay it becomes a chronic condition that
can get worse over time and this is what
has prompted lawsuits this is that that
um gastric paralysis is where lawsuits
will start starting to come out you know
from because of
that next there's been more adverse
reactions as well adverse reactions
reported included nausea vomiting
diarrhea dehydration abdominal pain and
constipation those reactions have
occurred in more than 5% of patients
with OIC other complications include uh
kidney injury now yet be aware that OIC
is in the process of gaining approval
for treatment of chronic kidney disease
in patients with type 2 diabetes so
think about it for a second okay chronic
kidney injury is one of the
complications but they're proving it for
C chronic kidney disease in patients
with type two
diabetes what could possibly go wrong
with that I'm just saying I'm just
saying okay pregnancy warnings the FDA
recommends that women stop the
medication at least two months prior to
a planned pregnancy because the drug
stays in their system for five weeks
after the last dose and animal
reproduction studies show potential risk
to The Unborn from exposure to
semaglutide during pregnancy so those of
you who want to have kids I wouldn't
mess with this at all I get it if you
want to lose the weight but you know
again if you're on this type of stuff I
you know you better detox I talk about
detoxing for at least six months before
you have a child just overall now
imagine if you're taking this so again
keep that in mind also the FDA adverse
events reports it has over 45 different
types of
gastrointestinal symptoms reported to
the FDA and its Adverse Events reporting
system so basically what they're saying
is that we don't know the long-term side
effects of 94% of the glp1 analoges okay
what it what does it do to normal
physiology after a couple of years of
use or longer right and then here's the
other question
and you know to think about when you're
looking at these types of things um what
happens when you get off it let's say
you you use it you lose a bunch of
weight and then you get off the drug
what happens what happens to your system
does it just go right back or do you do
you now change
your um do you do you change your way of
doing things right do you change your
eating habits do you change your
exercise habits to try to keep the
weight off now because a lot of people
have trouble just taking the weight off
in general right so these things are
actually just doing that but now let's
say you do that and you get to the
weight you want to get to does that mean
you change your your
ways it's a good question right what are
the long-term effects we really don't
know because what's what they're doing
now is postmarketing studies so they
Market the drug they get it out there
people are starting to use it and then
they do studies post marketing and then
this is where you find out oh by the way
this this is all the stuff and this is
all the crazy stuff that's
happening so you know you guys can kind
of see it for yourself I just gave you
the highlights of the article but
definitely read it but definitely keep
track of this and again those of you who
are on the fence thinking about using
this type of thing you know do your
homework as I always say with anything
do your homework don't take my word for
it read the articles look it up you know
talk to your doctor whatever and see if
it's worth it to use these type of
things is it worth it you again we don't
know what all the side effects are I'm
sure there's going to be more as as time
goes along we don't know
