Metformin - Scary Side Effects
Metformin is the first line anti diabetic medication used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
In this video you’ll learn the important side effects of metformin.
Metformin is generally a well tolerated medication. Most of its adverse effects are related to the gastrointestinal system.
These include nausea and vomiting, metallic taste, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, and loss of appetite.
They are often more noticeable when metformin is first started and usually improve with continued use.
Taking metformin with or after meals can help reduce these symptoms.
Other common side effects include headache, fatigue and weakness, and weight loss.
Another important long-term effect is vitamin B12 deficiency, particularly with prolonged treatment or higher doses. This can contribute to anemia or neurological symptoms such as tingling and numbness.
A rare but serious complication is lactic acidosis, which is more likely in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment, significant tissue hypoxia, or other major risk factors.
Metformin should therefore be used carefully in these patients.
It is important to keep in mind that never stop metformin or change your dose without medical advice.
