Ласково мерцали звезды с вышины;

ON THE RIVER BANK

Above the river is a house with a flame burning in the window.
It lays a bright streak upon the water.
The folk at home are waiting for the fisherman to return witn his catch.
He promised to come back in two days' time

But yet a third day passed and he's still not back.
The children wait in vain as does their old grandfather.
The most impatient of all, his wife waits for him
More silent tnan the night and pale as a canvas...

Now they sit down to supper; she doesn't feel like eating,
"What if a disaster have really happened?..."
A boat is carried along the river;
In it resounds a song that's more and more audible.

Hearing the sounds of that familiar song
The children burst from the house like a shot.
Their mother cheerfully jumps up from her spinning wheel.
And granddad suddenly has found the strength to run.

The song is drowned out by the children's ringing cry
Vainly does the old man attempt to calm his grandchildren down.
And so he's come back, cheerful and healthy!
And here he starts with his Cock-and-bull fisherman's tales.

In his large nets and small ones he caught the big catch.
The children listen to him with curiosity;
And granddad eyes the pike: "It's a real whopper!"
Mother sticks a bass into her son's hand.

Their laughter long resounds
Above the river. The golden moon
Looks on with admiration; the stars from on high
yave promised the children happy dreams.
