Hello, I'm LittleCloud
Today I'm going to take you to try
The must-eat dessert in the Netherlands on New Year's Day - Oliebollen
Before we go to eat
Let me give you a brief introduction
What are Oliebollen?
and why do we only eat them during New Year's Eve & New Year's Day?
Let's start ...
Oliebollen is a 100% high fat dessert
It's not only fried in oil
It's also sprinkled with a little bit of sugar powder before eating
Each baker has his / her own unique recipe
And every year there's an oliebollentest contest
for the best oliebollen baker
But no one knows for sure
Who ate the first Oliebollen
And no one knows
How it came to the Netherlands.
The most mythological tale of oliebollen said that
Every year between December 26 till January 6
Batavian and Frisian
would eat a type of fried dough
to avoid being harmed by Perchta
or other evil spirits
Because they believed that in winter, Perchta
would cut open the bellies with her sword of all she came across
By eating these oliebollen
because of the fat in the oliebollen, her sword would slide off the body
they could escape from being stabbed
To be honest, there are many versions of the oliebollen legend.
But this doesn't stop us from eating them now.
Let's go ...
I'm in a city in the middle of the Netherlands
It's called Amersfoort.
And behind me is the landmark of Amersfoort
But today we're not going to introduce the tourist attractions
Today we are going to take you to try
which I personally think is
The best oliebollen in Amersfoort
I'll tell you more about this city when I get a chance
Let's go now ...
Here we are, the bakery is just in front of us.
Brood Atelier, which is near to Amersfoort's landmark
This bakery has only been in business for two years
The baker fried good oliebollen
He adds sultanas and apples to oliebollen
Each oliebollen has its own layers of flavour
Each oliebollen is €1
30 December and 31 December of each year
The baker opens a stall outside to sell oliebollen
In addition to oliebollen
They also sell other breads and desserts
such as appel beignet
sugar bread, raisin bread, etc
If you have the chance to spend New Year's Eve in Holland
Don't miss out on this traditional dessert just because you're afraid of getting fat
deep-fried oliebollen fresh out of the pan
sprinkled with a little bit of sugar powder
is super delicious
you walk by, pass by, but should not miss it
Happy New Year everyone!
Before the film ends
I'd like to introduce you to this historical building
This medieval gate is called Koppelpoort
It is one of the landmarks of Amersfoort
The gate is largely retains its original appearance
It combines land and water-gates
During the Middle Ages
Twelve wheel-turners (prisoners) were collected morning and evening by several guards
These 12 prisoners had to work in unison
if they did not begin walking simultaneously,
then one could fall, dragging the rest along with often fatal results
When the attackers got too close to the water gate
They could be disturbed by hot oil or malt.
Koppelpoort is open to visitors every summer
But reservation is required
a tour guide will get you inside the building
to explain and show you the mechanism of the gate
If you ever get the chance to visit Amersfoort
I highly recommend a guided tour of Koppelpoort
to uncover the stories behind it
If you want to know more
about the life in the Netherlands
please leave me a comment
That's all for today!
