ATD-X戰鬥機是日本引進美國的技術製造而出的單發隱身戰鬥機，在美國和日本兩方最終確定的“心神”隱形機設計方案中，基本上是YF-23的氣動外形，比如大根梢比梯形主機翼、集平尾和垂尾功能於一體的V型尾翼、S型進氣道、槽溝形尾噴管等。與其他國家的五代機不同，這款“心神”似乎沒有側彈倉，機腹的空間也非常狹小，機頭尺寸也並不大，因此“心神”的作戰能力非常有限，甚至是可以基本忽略。2014年，日本TBS電視臺播出的隱形戰鬥機技術驗證機ATD-X“心神”的專題片中，這架名爲“日之丸”1號的飛機，出現在三菱重工名古屋工廠。一直雲遮霧罩中的“心神”，算是揭開了蓋頭，儘管其起落架、進氣道、尾噴口處還被刻意虛化處理。據日媒報道稱，在其基礎上發展的所謂“第六代戰鬥機”F-3，將於2035年服役。
