In April 2022, the Security Ministry made a policy decision that the Taiwan Air Force Command would complete the bidding for a new round of reconditioning works of the runway on Taiping Island in Nansha within this year, and plan to extend the current 1,150-meter runway to 1,500 meters.It is understood that after the extension of the runway, it will be able to take off and land all types of Taiwan fighter jets.The government plans to extend the length of taiping island by 100 meters, in addition to dredging the depth of ship seats inside the pier.In addition, the runway of the airport will be extended by using the new land that was built during the construction of taepyeongdo Pier.It is understood that the US rejected the plan to extend the terminal, but agreed to Taiwan to extend the airport runway.
At the beginning of the reconstruction of Taiping Island pier, the secret budget was set up to build a huge wave suppression block in the northwest side of the island to consolidate the new land needed for the future extension of runway. However, the US side has long been highly suspicious of Taiwan's reconstruction of Taiping Island, so the project progress is slow.
2022年4月，臺灣國安單位做了政策決定，由臺灣空軍司令部在今年內完成南沙太平島跑道新一波整建工程的招標作業，計劃將目前長度1150米的跑道，延長爲1500米。據瞭解，跑道延長後，將能供臺灣所有類型戰機起降。臺灣官方針對太平島的建設，是除了浚深碼頭內側船舶席位的深度之外，同時要延長碼頭的長度達100米。並利用當初興建太平島碼頭挖掘時堆積出的新生地，延長機場跑道。據瞭解，美方否決了碼頭延長的計劃，但同意臺灣延長機場跑道。
太平島碼頭重新整建之初就曾編列機密預算，在島的西北側興建巨型消波塊，藉以鞏固未來跑道延長所需的這塊新生地，但美方長期來對臺灣在太平島相關整建，持高度疑慮，因此工程進度緩慢。
