Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38, "Spring Symphony" is one of the outstanding examples of Romanticism in music. The entire symphony displays many typical characteristics of the Romantic era.
"Robert Schumann's entire thinking and sensibility was captivated by the world of Romanticism long before he became acquainted with Schubert's works, and he felt drawn to it and its poets. Schubert's creations, however, gave him the inspiration and the appropriate guidance for the musical representation of the images of his romantically excited imagination, his romantically moved inner being. He became the purest representative of musical romanticism, and in such a way that it produced in him an even more peculiar mode of expression and correspondingly altered technique than in the aforementioned masters. Weber (Carl Maria von Weber) immersed himself in medieval romanticism; romantic infinity was the almost inexhaustible processing of a basic idea. Schumann took the final step in this direction by exploring the entire field in all directions and moulding it musically. He was a Romantic through and through, so much so that he created a world that was just as fantastic as the one he dreamed of. He realised early on that musical art was the art through which he was able to express what came alive in his imagination and his feelings." (Source: "Musikalisches Conversations-Lexikon.
