In ancient times, long before text messages and social media, there was also a way to convey your feelings and messages in a very concise way. The language of flowers!

People gave flowers or plants that had the meaning of what they wanted to convey. And this was not just limited to individual words. Of course, the language of flowers was subject to change, so these statements are always meaningful only in relation to the source and its time. According to a 200-year-old booklet on the language of flowers, flowers could also be used to express time. For example, a bouquet of blossoming roses signalled the first hour. Presumably, whether it was actually given as a gift or mentioned in a poem or conversation was not the most important thing. For the ancients, this was still knowledge that was generally known.

Here in the video we see a birch trunk and some of its branches and leaves. A birch leaf had the meaning (according to the "Complimentirbuch oder Anweisung in Gesellschaften ... höflich und angemessen zu reden, from 1840): "Come closer!" While the birch branches meant "Love and hope must never leave us!".

Most of all, we should never lose hope, I like to take this with me as a reminder.

The landscape was filmed by Christian Schlegel in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, the video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
