The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major op. 61 by Ludwig van Beethoven is Beethoven's only completed concerto in this genre.

Beethoven composed the work for his friend and violin virtuoso Franz Clement (1780-1842), who premiered it on 23 December 1806 in one of his concerts at the Theater an der Wien. The Viennese critic Möser wrote about it in the theatre newspaper:

"The excellent violinist Klement played, among other excellent pieces, a violin concerto by Beethofen, which was received with exceptional applause due to its originality and many beautiful passages. In particular, Klement's proven artistry and grace, his strength and confidence on the violin, which is his slave, were received with rapturous bravos. It struck the educated world how Klement could stoop to many a jest and farce to amuse the rabble, as he was able to express beauty and sublimity in every former production. We do not disagree with this opinion. The judgement of connoisseurs on Beethhoven's concerto is undivided, conceding to it some beauty, but admitting that the context often seems quite disjointed, and that the endless repetitions of some common passages could easily tire. It says that Beethhoven should use his recognised great talents more appropriately and give us works that resemble his first symphonies in C and D, his charming septet in E flat, the witty quintet in D major, and several of his earlier compositions, which will always place him among the first composers. At the same time, however, it is feared that if Beethhofen continues on this path, he and the public will fare badly. The music could soon get to the point where anyone who is not thoroughly familiar with the rules and difficulties of the art would find no enjoyment in it at all, but would leave the concert with an unpleasant feeling of weariness, depressed by a multitude of incoherent and heaped-up ideas and a constant tumult of a few instruments that were supposed to characterise the entrance. The audience generally liked this concerto and Clement's fantasies extraordinarily."
The Beethoven biographer Alexander Wheelock Thayer reports "that Clement played his solo a vista (Italian: to play from sight) without prior rehearsal." The first edition was published by the Vienna Bureau des arts et d'industrie and was dedicated to Stephan von Breuning. Beethoven dedicated the version for piano published by the same publisher to Breuning's wife Julie, née von Vering (1791-1809).
