Offenbach's Infernal Galop is taken from Jacques Offenbach's satirical opera Orpheus in the Underworld. It tells the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice in a humorous and satyrical way and is said to have served as a humorous transposition of a pointed social critique. Eurydice, unhappy in her marriage to Orpheus, finds comfort in the arms of Pluto, the god of the underworld. Orpheus, who is also unfaithful, is forced by public opinion to seek help from someone in the Olymp. But when the supreme god Jupiter goes to the underworld (with his entire entourage) to get to the bottom of the matter, he wants the beautiful Eurydice for himself. With a little supernatural power in the form of lightning and trickery, he gets her.

It is a social critique of the authorities who do what "Nobless Oblige" does not approve of. Offenbach was not only blessed with an immensely fertile imagination and a light pen, he also possessed a decisive talent.

With his Orpheus, Offenbach made a mockery of the ruling authorities. Even the reigning Emperor Napoleon III was not spared. He could see himself in the character of the lovesick supreme god Jupiter, but he liked the opera so much that he took no offence at Offenbach's allusions and applauded loudly.

The operetta is known for its lively music and humorous portrayal of ancient mythology.
