The 1889 World Exhibition in Paris, where Satie also came into contact with oriental and non-European music, is said to have been the source of musical inspiration for the Gnossiennes. One indication of this is the use of non-diatonic scales in the pieces.

"The life of Erik Satie (actually Alfred-Erik-Leslie) was entirely characterised by humour. But this often tragic humour seems like that of an extraordinarily lonely man whose critical spirit turns back on itself. Although much less gifted in the field than Claude Debussy, Satie preceded him in the conquest of harmonic freedom."
