"In a period of about 17 years, he (Franz Peter Schubert) wrote a series of the most comprehensive works, operas and operettas, 8 synphonies, about 600 songs, masses and vocal works of all kinds, sonatas and quartets, trios and duos, marches and polonaises and a series of piano works, etc.. And among them a whole number of works of imperishable value, which stand as landmarks on the border of development, and which have become conclusive and newly important."

Schubert wrote the "Impromptu" piano solos towards the end of his rather short life, and so his wisdom, wealth of life experience and great creative power can shine through in his compositions in a most delicious way.
