The Impromptus by Franz Schubert are lyrical piano pieces from the last years of the composer's life. They are divided into two sets of four pieces each. He composed the first group (D 899, op. 90) in the summer and autumn of 1827, and added four more pieces (D 935, op. 142) in December of the same year.

Along with the Moments musicaux, the Character pieces, all in B flat major, are among his best-known piano works and, especially in earlier times, were an integral part of teaching literature and domestic music; today they form part of pianists' concert programmes and are played cyclically or individually. The term "character piece", which comes from the French, is used to describe a piece of music by a pianist.

The term impromptu ("improvisation", "momentary inspiration") for the first four Impromptus D 899, which comes from the French, goes back to the Viennese publisher Tobias Haslinger, who published only the first two during Schubert's lifetime.
