Battista Spagnoli, also known as Battista Mantovano, The Mantuan, was an Italian poet, clergyman and painter.
Battista Mantovano's Eglogues, composed around 1480, are his best known and most significant work in the history of literature. He writes a realistic view of the peasant world, considered worthy of being elevated to literary subject matter.
In act 4 scene 2 of Love's Labour's Lost, Shakespeare cites the first verse of Spagnoli’s Eglogues:

“Fauste precor gelida quando pecus omne sub umbra / Ruminat»
Faustus, since your whole flock is ruminating in the cool shade, I pray

Holofernes continued, 'Ah, good old Mantuan!”

By writing “ah good old mantuan” Shakespeare was doing a homage to the Mantual writer Battista Spagnoli.
