With Venus and Adonis, Shakespeare in 1593 launches his career as a poet.
For this poem the author derives his inspiration from the sweet and tender sentiments of the italian renaissance. In particular, From ovid.
Ovid  was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. Although Ovid enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime, the emperor Augustus banished him to Tomis, a Dacian province on the Black Sea, where he remained a decade until his death.
Venus and Adonis begins with the following Latin epigraph Shakespeare borrows from lines 35 and 36 of Elegy 25 in Amores (The Art of Love), by Ovid:
Vilia miretur vulgus; mihi flavus ApolloPocula Castalia plena ministret aqua.
Let the common people admire vile things. May golden Apollo serve me a cupful of water from the fountain of Castalia.What does this mean?
