On May 5 1593 a handbill was anonymously posted to the door of an Austin friars, the dutch church of London where John Florio’s father Michelangelo worked as preacher. This libel accused aliens or strangers of merely posing as protestants to enter england and taking the bread out of English mouths. This resulted in several arrests, including that of Marlowe and Thomas Kyd because it was signed as “Tamberlaine”.

In this hostile environment, the play "Sir Thomas More," is important because Shakespeare contributed a series of speeches advocating for the humane treatment of refugees. These speeches, delivered by the character Thomas More, argue for compassion towards those forced to seek asylum due to expulsion from their homeland. This play, although never completed, provides a historical context for modern debates about immigration.
