Is that rock moving?
Oh, dude, that is a styrofoam crack.
Vertical Limit, you've been exposed.
Today, we're going to be watching Vertical Limit.
How realistic is that opening scene?
Is that a paper mache bird?
That's amazing.
So where is this location?
This does, it's not Moab.
No, I think it's Monument Valley, which is really not a climbing
destination due to legal reasons.
She's got three orange TCUs, but isn't she on the bottom?
And why is she belaying her brother?
Cause the brother is in the middle of the dad and the sister climbing up to
the dad who's already led the pitch.
Do you dino every roof you're on?
Uh, no.
The director was just like, make that look exciting.
Swing back and forth some.
Yeah, that's, that's what I always do on crimps is I swing as much as possible.
So there were no other climbers in that wide shot.
Why is he still building the anchor?
He's climbing.
The sister is belaying.
With no pieces in between them.
He's not placing pro.
And that definitely looks like a top rope.
We got amateurs at 12 o'clock.
Check your safety.
Watch out for those amateurs.
We got amateurs at 12 o'clock.
Check your safety.
Now's the time to be safe.
I just want to say I watch this when I was around 16 or 18, before I started
climbing, he really put a lot of gear fear into my subconscious when I did start
climbing.
We got to slow this down.
So first the whistle.
What's the whistle for?
Are you warning somebody?
This guy falls climbing.
That's a huge traversing.
Wow.
That bolt explodes before he's even like level with it.
Huh?
Dad's hugging the wall now and he's loading what looks like a clove hitch.
And if there's Samuel climbing, I don't understand what's going on here.
Yeah.
This dude totally looks like he's climbing.
Is this a speaker or a large hex that's just randomly hanging in the wall as they
both leave?
You, you forgot to mention how high that guy went above.
He barely missed dad and now he's like 40 feet above him.
Oh yeah.
He's swung way up and he's upside down, which I don't think he would have got
that in orientation.
Only 40 feet of rope in that system.
In this here.
Yeah.
Let's talk about bolts real quick.
They're strong, like really strong.
That guy maybe got four kilonewtons on that bolt and all bolts we test and even
in soft rock are 20 kilonewtons, if not 40 kilonewtons strong.
And every bolt in this movie seems to be made out of toothpicks.
So the rope has now missed the dad in this shot.
So when the guy swung by, he was hugging the rock.
And then the next scene, he's looking up with both hands and a crack hanging on.
And then the rope that missed him in the previous scene was at his throat in one
frame, below his arms in the next frame, and then in his lap.
But when they play the whole thing, it looks like it rips his arms down and puts
him in the fetal position.
But then his rope was tied directly to the anchor and he had a lot of rope on the
anchor.
And then in the next scene, there's pretty much nothing there.
And when they show everybody hanging and dangling, there's barely 50 feet of rope
between the dad and the daughter.
So I was curious how strong a human body might be if a rope just came down and cut
right through the midsection.
And so we decided to do a little science with something that is somewhat
replicable to a human body.
Our high tech human analog.
So for the sake of having a good movie, we'll go with the fact that this did not
cut him in half and that we're not seeing the dad's pumpkin seeds.
So the dad gets pulled off, pulls off the son.
For being in a hanging belay, that is an awfully long tether.
If you look at how this rope doesn't like stretch at all, it just shock loads the
dad. That would have cut him in half.
That that rope is so loose, but if you're not going to be able to deviate that
rope. Wow.
What are these guys doing underneath the dad?
Are they breakdancing?
All right, so we were curious how much force would be generated by breakdancing
with five people on a rope.
Oh, I'm scared.
I'm scared.
So I'm going to wiggle.
We had two point eight kilonewtons, just us on there.
But then I was actually shocked that we actually got four kilonewtons when we were
like wiggling around.
Yeah, it did generate a little bit more force, but nowhere near as much as those big
falls would have.
Oh, my God. The shock load of even falling four to six feet would have generated
enough to actually break the rope.
If I was hanging on some dude's nuts, I would just like try to hold still, you know.
So how did that rope going over him not take his face off?
Wait a minute. So they just fell off and now the cam comes out.
That has not been our experience testing cams.
We've actually tested that those exact cams haven't we?
Yeah. All right. How is Annie tied in?
Annie's got a lot of carabiners there.
They definitely rigged that so she could not reach this wall.
Yeah. Like if that happened for real, you could push against the way the rope came.
I've noticed when cams get pulled, they don't like get sucked back up like a like
a poop that doesn't want to leave.
You know, I'm going to pull everybody down and everybody's going to die.
You're wrong. Shut up, Annie.
Wow. Before mansplaining was frowned upon.
Just cut the rope.
Any second now the cam is going to come out of the wall and Annie and you are going to die.
Is that what you want? Nobody's going to.
Very stressful scene.
Oh, Bird's back.
We wanted to see what would actually change with the forces if you cut somebody off
Honestly, I just wanted to cut Ryan off the end of the rope.
Now I want you to cut me down because I don't understand how cams work.
And this will help nothing.
You're still stuck.
Oh, it's farting even more.
I'm waiting for the thud.
Have you figured out how to self rescue now that I'm dead?
