Massachusetts is known as the Bay State, and it's easy to see why. Many large bays line
this state's coastline. Massachusetts was the sixth state to join the United States
of America, when it ratified the Constitution on February 6, 1788.
Massachusetts is famously the home of the Pilgrims, who landed their ship, the Mayflower,
at Plymouth in 1620. Plymouth was also home to the first Thanksgiving, which took place
following the Harvest in 1621.
In 1692, the town of Salem was the site of the infamous Salem Witch Trials. During this
time more than 150 people were arrested because people thought they were witches.
Massachusetts played an important role in the American Revolution as well. In 1773,
protesters in Boston destroyed an entire shipment of tea by throwing it into the harbor to show
how angry they were about new, high taxes imposed on them by the British government.
This became known as the Boston Tea Party.
Here's a little bit more about Massachusetts.
I hope you enjoyed learning about Massachusetts, the Bay State.
