In the future, humans may live on Mars. But this may not be the case soon. So what if robots will live on Mars before humans? Robots living on Mars may be more feasible.

Now we have the achievement of sending robots to Mars.
In 1970 the Soviet Union made the first attempt on Mar 2 but failed; Mar 3 and Mar 6 also failed. The first robot to successfully set foot on Mars was the American Viking 1 in 1976. Then came the Sojourner Rover, a rover the size of a remote control car. And two self-propelled robots Spirit and Opportunity.

If we put humans on Mars, we might need to live underground. Once underground, we will be insulated and protected from cosmic radiation dust and micrometeorites. But it comes with many challenges, like how do we dig tunnels on Mars?

To overcome this, engineers from Eckersley O'Callaghan had the idea to create an artificial cave on the surface of Mars that would offer all the benefits of being underground. The idea is to 3D print a giant shell using an automated robot. This crust is made of rock and dust from Mars. The base's interior will be collapsible inflatable modules that make it easy to pack and transport.
