Cloverleaf Exercise - Show Jumping Training.
Traci and Carleton Brooks demonstrate the Cloverleaf exercise to train a performance horse in this video.
This exercise involves maneuvering your horse while teaching balance, jumping, and turning.
This exercise is a good way to reinforce the concept. This is also a great exercise to practice on your own to put some steady miles at your horse's feet.
For the training to have the best effect on the horse, you need at least three horse and rider combinations to participate.
You will direct your horse to follow the pattern, depending on its needs. Whenever you feel the horse leaning in a specific direction, you will turn him to the left if you think of him leaning to the right.
Loosen the reins and lean in a particular direction. If the horse is not depending, rotate it in the same direction as it is leading.
Keep your eyes up and focus on where you're trying to go. Ignore other horses around you.
Focus on the front and act like it never happened. You'll have to ride it forward to give it more leadership actively.
Instantly stops the horse, which increases its traction in the middle, increases its responsiveness in turns, and makes its lines straighter.
If your horse is on the hotter end of the scale, spend the last two minutes or so trotting and rubbing all over him. That’ll end the exercise on a nice relaxed note. This isn’t as important for a lazy horse since you’ll focus more on keeping him moving forward.
Good luck!
