The Rules of Polo - How to Play Polo
In this video, Ninh will explain The Rules of Polo – an ancient ball game played on horseback between two teams of 4 people each.
- Polo is played on a Polo field 300 yards long and 200 yards wide, although the field may be as little as 160 yards wide if it is a game court.
- The goal posts are 8 yards wide and open at the top.
- Each Polo match will consist of 4 chukkas (turns), each lasting 7 minutes of actual competition.
- The game will start when the referee throws the ball between the two teams. This is also how the game is restarted after a goal is scored.
- When a goal is scored, the teams switch side.
- To gain an advantage or secure the ball, members of the opposing team can ride each other off, means they can try to move them out of the ball or even take them out of the game. Players can also 'touch' the opponent, a physical move similar to a body check in hockey. Players can also hook the opponent's club when hitting the ball.
- Polo is overseen by two mounted referees, who consult each other on decisions. They can consult the match referee or "third person" if they disagree.
- After a foul, a free kick can be awarded toward a goal.
- The team with the most goals at the end of the match is declared the winner.
- Spectators are invited to cross the field during halftime to stomp divots.
