Rescue horses that have been formally abused and starved are confused, mistrustful, and sometimes uncooperative or aggressive. They require comprehension, rehabilitation, and appropriate training to gain trust and respect for their handler.
In this video, professional trainer Clinton Anderson shows how he trains Cider - a 6-year-old mare, to help her recover from abuse.
Here are a few tips for training:
- Find out as much as you can: check about any previous owners, boarding experiences, behavioral difficulties, training, veterinary care, and medical conditions..
- Start the Fundamentals level with his horse. He will advance more quickly if you treat him like any other horse. Gaining your horse's respect and trust via the Fundamentals groundwork and riding exercises can also assist you in taking control of his feet. The activities also help you become a dependable, well-respected leader for your horse.
- Spend extra time bonding: putting extra effort to rebuild trust. As soon as you can, start focusing on building a relationship with your horse.
