
Pluto | A Dwarf Planet

Pluto was ranked as the ninth planet in the solar system until it was demoted in 2006. Let’s discover the mysterious of Pluto and why it is now considered part of the Kuiper belt.
At the edge of the solar system, Pluto is nestled in the distant Kuiper belt.
Although one of the most significant objects in the Kuiper belt, Pluto is only about a quarter the size of Earth's moon.
Pluto takes 248 earth years to orbit the Sun, and the average distance of Pluto from the Earth is 3.6 more than a billion miles which is 40 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. This results in freezing Pluto's temperatures ranging from -375oF (-226oC) to -400oF (-240oC).
Pluto's frigid temperature affects its geological composition. Pluto's core can be made of rock and metal surrounded by a layer of ice. The dwarf planet's crust is made of rocky material and other types of ice, such as frozen carbon monoxide and nitrogen.
Pluto's atmosphere is thin and high-altitude due to the small dwarf planet's gravity. It is only about 6% as powerful as the Earth.
Pluto has five moons. The largest of which is Charon, half the size of Pluto. The remaining four moons are Nix, Hydra, Kerberos, and Styx.
In 2006 Pluto was not called a planet but became a dwarf planet due to its inability to clear the orbit of debris.
