Why don't we explore Venus?
1. Venus has a cloudy, acidic, and toxic atmosphere. These are corrosive to metals and destroy electronic parts. The extreme conditions on Venus are a challenge if a spacecraft wants to land on it.
2. Venus has a surface temperature of 430°C; the thermometer can melt any spacesuit.
3. Venus's thick clouds block the Sun's rays and make the sky orange with storms, lightning, and acid rain turning everything it touches into liquid.
4. The air pressure at Venus is about 90 bar, equivalent to being submerged 1 km below the ocean surface.
5. We examine Mars because Mars is farther away than Venus but moves slower than Venus. That means our spacecraft can catch up to the star. And Venus is closer to the Sun, so it moves faster, so their spacecraft can only catch up at extremely high speeds - a speed only achieved in the presence of gravity.
But we will have two missions on Venus in the future
- The DAVINCI+ mission: examine the composition of Venus's atmosphere.
- The VERITAS mission: map the surface of Venus.
- The EnVision mission: make detailed observations of Venus.
