Voyager 1 has two cameras. Those cameras have been turned off during Voyager 1’s mission to save power and extend the life of the Voyager 1. What is the reason?
Voyager 1 is powered by an RTG which takes the heat from a radioactive material and turns it into electricity. Every year, the power output deteriorates by about 4 watts. After 13 years in operation, Voyager 1 is now producing only 57% of its initial power output. Therefore, shutting down the camera is to reduce the power consumption.

Voyager 1 broke numerous records. It is the most distant object in space. It is currently at a point of 24 billion kilometers from Earth. It has been active for the longest period of time of over 45 years.

It's hard to believe that after all that time in the harsh environment of space, the computers and systems designed on Earth in the '70s are still working.

Voyager 1 was equipped with technology that was ahead of its time. A perfect example is the camera system.

Voyager 1 used a two-camera system using analog to digital technology. It has a resolution of 800 x 800 pixels and captures 8-bit images in grayscale. One camera has a wide-angle lens to capture the planets in full detail as the probe comes close to them. The other camera has a narrow-angle lens that is magnified and can capture the finer details of each planet it observes.
