How to Scallop Braid a Long Mane - Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial
An intricate and elegant scallop braid makes your horse stand out from the crown. This technique is well-suited to baroque, Friesian, or any horse breed with a long mane.
In this step-by-step tutorial, I will show you how to scallop braid a long mane, and quickly give your horse a stunning appearance. It looks complex but is actually very simple to carry out.
Follow these instructions:
- It is a good idea to collect all of your braiding tools and supplies before you begin braiding.
- As with other braids, it's up to you whether you want the elastic to match your ponytail. If you focus on the braids, we recommend choosing a flexible color to match the mane's color. For an eye-catching braid, use an elastic band of a coordinating color (such as a white band over a black or maroon mane).
- Prepare the mane with a brush dipped in water and / or apply a base coat of sticky spray (0:13)
- Divide the section into 3 parts and braid down part way, securing with a braid band (0:52)
- Grab two new strands of hair and the “tail” from previous braid will become the first piece of the new braid (1:15)
- Continue this process down the length of the neck (1:36)
- On the last section, braid as far down as you can and tuck and roll the end securely as shown above (2:04)
- Aim for about a fingers length down below the crest of neck (2:52)
- Find the middle of the section clearly with finger and carefully pull through neat braid (2:59)
- The braid band should remain hidden in the thickness of the bun (3:10)
