We walk some of historic Route 66 at 66! What's this marker along the Mother Road in the San Gabriel Valley? What is the Albert Bancroft mileage system and what do these numbers mean? Host Pat Pattison takes us on a tour if this mysterious piece of California History hiding in plain sight. Address correction is it’s EAST Colorado Blvd not West.,
Hi it's Pat Patterson and here we are on the old Route 66. And why is this gravestone here I want
to know. Well it's not a gravestone. It's the last remaining marker of the Bancroft marking system.
Albert Bancroft decided to come up with a way to mark roads back in the 1890s and it was a
10 block system for every mile. It started in Contra Costa County in the 1890s, 1892 to be exact
and it spread here to Los Angeles. This demarcation they would pick a central locus
in the city. In our case it was a courthouse downtown. So this is 11 miles from the courthouse
that's the 11 and then the 220 and the 222 marks how far along you are in that 11th mile.
This is the last remaining marker. It sits here on Colorado Boulevard and Pasadena. Probably
most people don't know what it is. I certainly didn't but it's a great part of our heritage
of the road system and the mother road of Route 66 that winds from Chicago
to LA. We're going to show you some more. Stick with us.
