The History of the Lamborghini Miura
Breathtaking. Amazing, shocking, and revolutionary. All of these phrases, in one form or another, were most likely spoken by automotive journalists visiting Lamborghini's stand at the 1966 Geneva car show, where the manufacturer unveiled the completed Miura to the world. The car’s sleek, powerful features and mid-mounted engine placement were unlike anything seen on a road car previously and extensively drew from the world of racing. Today, we recognize the Lamborghini Miura as the world's first supercar, laying the groundwork for today's hypercars with performance well above what was previously considered feasible.

However, in 1965, young Americans were opposing the Vietnam War, while many working-class Italians were denouncing what they saw as unfair labor practices in Italy's thriving industrial enterprises. Strikes were regular, but despite the odds, Ferruccio Lamborghini, a self-made tractor builder, had launched a new luxury carmaker.

Automobili Lamborghini was only a year old, but it was already booming. Orders for the 350 GT, a fast, sumptuous sports coupe designed to give owners of Ferraris and Maseratis a higher-quality, more user-friendly car, came in swiftly. The 350 GT and its successor, the 4.0-liter 400 GT, were successful almost immediately as fast, elegant grand touring vehicles, powered by a front-mounted 3.5-liter quad-cam V-12 engine built by Giotto Bizzarrini—the genius behind Ferrari's all-conquering 250 GTO sports racer.
