Restoring antique wallpaper requires a lot of effort and careful technique so the painting can look just as new as when it was first affixed to the plaster.
In this video, This Old House host Kevin O'Connor discusses how to restore antique wallpaper when he visits Franklin Pierce's 200-year-old house. Kevin talks with museum staff about restoring the scenic wallpaper that was manufactured by hand in France in the 19th century.
The Origins of Wallpaper (2:12)
In palaces and big houses, you'll find the most elaborate wallpaper, which is typically from European. They were often produced over a period of years using tens of thousands of colored wood blocks in various sizes. For these reasons, early versions of European wallpaper are rare and worth restoring.

Determine the issues (3:30)
Wallpaper is vulnerable to degradation over time, just like most building materials. Water damage, insect damage, loss of adhesion, and the loss of portions of wallpaper for various reasons are typical damages that vintage wallpaper may present.

The Importance of Cleaning (4:00)
The most important phase follows after carefully recording and photographing the wallpaper: a thorough cleaning. To carefully remove dirt, dust, and bug debris from the surface, paper restoration specialists utilize non-silicone rubber sponges and cosmetic sponges. They move very gently so as not to remove the wallpaper's medium, pigment, or color.

Using Paper Infill (5:00)
During the restoration procedure, technicians fill in the old wallpaper with fresh paper. To fill up the gaps, they utilize Japanese paper, which has long fibers and is both flexible and strong. Before cutting a matching patch and adhering it in place using standard wallpaper glue, they trace the patch on a piece of mylar paper (methyl cellulose). They will then add a second layer of toned paper to match the pattern's backdrop and height of the wallpaper.

Picture-making and coloring (7:00)
Painting inside is the last phase in the repair procedure. In this stage, restoration specialists will imitate the style and pattern of the original wallpaper design using matte paints and crayon pencils.

During this phase, the technicians spend a lot of time. To make sure the colors match the existing wallpaper, they must mix the pigments and paints, test them, and then wait for them to dry. The goal is to restore the wallpaper to the point that the eye can integrate the repair without attempting to recreate the artist's intent.

Repairing antique wallpaper is important for maintaining historical integrity and revealing long-lost designs. Antique wallpaper restoration is a labor of love that takes a lot of time, patience, and talent, but the historical designs are priceless and important for preserving these works of old art.
