What's so special about the International Space Station?

In this video, we review the history of the International Space Station and highlight the great achievements that have already been made on human’s cosmic outpost.
The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest man-made object in the solar system and the largest satellite in low Earth orbit, regularly visible to the naked eye from the Earth's surface. It maintains an average altitude of 400 kilometers (250 mi) by re-accelerating maneuvers using the Zvezda Service Module engines or by spacecraft probes. The ISS orbits Earth in about 93 minutes, completing 15.5 orbits per day.
With six state-of-the-art laboratories, the Space Station is the premier research facility in space, four times larger and more capable than any previous space station. It is hoped that it will enable advances in medicine, technology and science.
Few facts about the ISS:
- The ISS has hosted more than 250 people since 1998.
- Contributions to the ISS come from 15 nations
- The space station travels an equivalent distance to the Moon and back in about a day.
- Russia is a major partner in the ISS, but due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, numerous international space partnerships were dissolved.
