The GT40s was Ford legend in motorsport history. The Mk III was the Blue Oval's attempt to recreate their endurance racing success in the consumer market, as well as a Le Mans homologation requirement. Unlike the converted MkIs that came before it, the Mk III was designed for a more leisurely road trip while still retaining a hint of Ford's motorsports prowess.

Elongated bodywork wrapped made room for luggage compartments (albeit small enough for a briefcase or two), an ashtray was added to the sparse interior, and the shift lever was moved to the center position. Previously, GT40s were primarily right-hand-drive, with the lever located between the driver's seat and the driver's side door.

Four of the seven Mk3s manufactured were left-hand drive. Only three were delivered to customers, with the remainder serving as promotional vehicles for Ford. Even with its 500lb 289ci grumbling lump of a V8 sitting midship, the MkIII was designed to keep power high and weight low, with a curb weight of 2,600lb. Its relatively gentle 306 horsepower was more than enough to propel the MkIII to race car speeds of more than 160 miles per hour, which was certainly fast enough for 1967 technology
