Obviously the heavens were kind to us on this day. We had beautiful wandering white clouds, the view of the various glaciers was wonderful and the rugged character of the glacial landscape was bathed in magical light.

Richard Wagner wrote a wealth of magnificent scenes with the Valkyrie, it is said to be one of the most beautiful in all opera literature. I would have preferred to leave out some of the themes, such as adultery or the love between twins, but those who love drama will find it in opera. The moral of the saga? Immoral behaviour brings ruin and bitterness to all. It is powerful music, no wonder that Ludwig II, who owned the score and the rights to the Valkyrie, could not wait for the premiere and premiered it without Wagner's consent.... Wagner wanted to perform the Valkyrie only after all parts of the opera had been completed. Richard Wagner, used many primary sources for his epic storytelling: Greek mythology, the Norse Edda and Völsung sagas, and the German Nibelungenlied. No wonder this opera is epic in scale.
