Hi there, it's Amber. Thanks for stopping by the Homestead.
Come see how we transform this adorable playhouse into a chicken coop!
We are adding fencing so the chickens and ducks can have more room to play!
Stay tuned for Part 2 where we paint it barnyard red and add a door to the fencing.
We hope you come back to the farm.
Love,
Am.
I'm a homestead happy mama. On this week's vlog we are building a fence onto the chicken coop
so the chickens and ducks can roam around outside and just enjoy more space to where they can
have worms and grass and sunshine. I really hope you enjoy this video. Maybe you can learn from
our mistakes. We were not as prepared as we should have been with our tools and different things
like that but we still got the job done so I hope you guys enjoy. Okay so we're here at the homestead
the wannabe homestead and we are what are we doing babe? Building the chicken coop. We're
building the chicken coop right? Yeah. So we're adding on to the chicken coop to where they can
be more free range but they can't be full free range because the hawks will get them.
At this point in time we are going to hopefully have some type of covering. I'm not sure if we'll
build off of the chicken coop or if we'll just buy like a netting type of thing so the hawks
won't get them but right now our goal is just getting them out of the coop because it's not
You get more chicken wire at the front? You get more chicken wire? Okay let's go get it.
Okay so we're going up to the front to get more chicken wire. That's where it's at
up here in the shed because we needed more. Hey they're in the back. It's our favorite place.
You ride with Dada?
Sam you want to be on YouTube? He's a chicken eater. Yeah that's one reason why we got to build
this. Oh he's so cute. He's the neighbor's dog. That's our neighbor's dog but he comes over a
So we actually have this piece. I think the people that were here before us
they like had rabbits so we are going to actually use this for our chickens for when they lay which
is going to be a while. This is a loose now. It needs some TLC but we're going to definitely
use it. So we're going to put it onto the chicken coop. What does that spell?
Oh my gosh what if there's wasp under there? Like under that tin thing?
Stay back so I can video this. It's not a snake. I'm a little nervous about wasps. I'm not gonna lie.
Oh I just need one more nail at the top left.
Daddy's like superman. You mean um what's his name? Hulk? Yeah.
You got gloves?
I bet you just can't get in.
Yeah. Watch out. Watch out. Come here Judson.
So there's some really big limbs we're gonna get out the way. Not we, him.
I wonder what color we should paint the coop. Keep it green or paint it red or white?
Barn red? I think so too.
Maybe. Maybe we should paint it
white and red like stripes.
This particular wire was actually left here and it has been a huge blessing just that we're able to
use it. It is very bent. That's the only thing I'm not really excited about but we worked and
worked with it and it actually turned out to look pretty good. So we did half of it with the old
and used wire and then we also bought some brand new wire but it is not as tall so right here we're
gonna put some on the bottom the other half and then add some to the top. You taking a nap?
You taking a nap? Looking good. We have somewhere to run and play.
And the chickens. I don't want to go in there. It's gonna be so nice. Is it heavy?
So it's a mess but it's coming together. He's gonna lift that and so we have the lay-in beds.
I guess that's what you call it. Sitting on desk and he's going to lift them and put them on the
house. The house. The chicken house. So they can have somewhere to lay. Oh my goodness. What do you
have? Let me see. Oh shoes. Dump it out.
We were kicking the water to each other and that's how we're wet. Yeah.
I love that they're gonna have shade. It's gonna be nice. Where's your safety goggles?
I'm not all up in that thing.
Look at you. That's gonna look nice. They're gonna appreciate that.
Oh it's making my nose itch.
All right that's better. Boy I didn't know you was a carpenter.
You trap. What do you need? That rotten board right there. Okay.
That rotten board right there. It's just temporary.
Can you push that in back towards the wall? The whole thing? Yeah push it. Can you go more?
There's it's up against the board.
Can you lift it?
Oh I dropped it. Hold on. You want to put this down?
Oh it is for an egg.
Boy it's hanging. It's setting up on that other one.
All right which one we do? I'm not gonna let go of it. Just get your stuff and I got it. Hurry up.
Oh hurry.
We're away from the wall. As you can see we have struggled with this piece right here.
I am not strong at all and I was shaking. My husband is a pretty strong guy but me nope
um not at all and so this really inspired me to start working out again because I want to be
strong for things like this and living out here and working on these projects definitely
will make you stronger. But in this moment I felt so weak. I was shaking and I'm like standing on
my tippy toes trying to get this thing to be level. It's not perfect but we got it pretty level
and we're just gonna roll with it. We're gonna take the chicken wire off and take the hinges
off and probably paint it and we're also gonna paint the chicken coop like a red a barnyard red
color. Like not bright red but a little deeper red. But I think what made this so hard was I
don't think we had like long enough screws. Like it just worked. Um it fit but like we could have
definitely made it easier by having longer screws and then my husband kept like right when he would
get it in there it would he would drop like a tool. So we just kept dropping tools. Couldn't
get it level but we finally got it and um I'm so thankful we got to do this together. Definitely
will teach you how to have like teamwork and stuff. So I'm pretty pretty impressed that we
we didn't like get aggravated each other or anything. Like we really worked together on
this one. So I think we did pretty good but I'm almost sold this desk and I'm really glad that
we kept the homeschool desk because they came in handy. It was perfect. I wish they would have
been taller. It wouldn't have been near as hard but it's it's all good. It worked out.
We put in a hard day's work. We sort of knew what we were doing but I think we could have done
things a little bit easier but that's okay. That's how we're gonna learn. So I'm really thankful for
this day and I'm just thankful that the chickens and the ducks got to do outside and that's really
that was the goal and now we're gonna go head off to bed.
