ExclusiveIntentionally pursuing silence allows you to contemplate life’s deeper meaning
“What am I doing here?” This is a question you may ask yourself when you’re in a strange, uncomfortable, or unbelievable situation. However, those who don’t have a strong faith or religious conviction of some sort may find it difficult to answer this question in its broader sense, when it means, “What am I doing here on the earth?” In school and at home, young people are commonly indoctrinated with the idea that the way to be successful in life is to get good enough grades to get into a good college to get a good job to make a lot of money. While there is nothing wrong with training yourself for financial stability, a life dedicated to nothing more than accumulating wealth will be empty.
Sadly, many young people today have never even asked the question “What am I doing here?” because they haven’t taken the time to reflect in silence on the meaning of life. Since ancient times, philosophers, monks, and healers have revered the power of silence for spurring deep contemplation, prayer, and spiritual reflection. As our world grows noisier, it’s becoming even more important to intentionally spend time in silence so that we can examine ourselves, pray, and discern what really matters in life.
