ExclusiveThe French Revolution sacrificed personal freedom for the greater good
The French Revolution was inspired by the American Revolution in its principles of liberty and equality instead of a monarchy. However, the humanistic ideas of the Enlightenment which inspired French revolutionaries made them rebel against all traditions, including religion and time-honored wisdom. An article in The Epoch Times called “Happy Bastille Day? Not for Many French Then or Now” describes how the French Revolution differed from the American Revolution by putting the general cause of freedom above the liberty and safety of the individual.
Cherishing personal liberty is not a good thing if it comes at the price of sacrificing all tradition and wisdom from the past. In his essay "Self-Reliance," Ralph Waldo Emerson talks about the importance of individualism and being true to oneself, as opposed to following a group or going along with the popular thing to do. Although there is a lot of truth in what he wrote, his idea that each person should follow only his own will is dangerous without a higher law of morality. This problem is similar to an issue we're facing today with advancing AI technology. The rights and autonomy of the individual human being are being threatened by the lack of guidelines or restrictions on AI.
