MIDDLETOWN – The mayor of the City of Hudson, Joseph Ferris, is asking mayors up and down the Hudson Valley to sign onto a letter he is sending to Albany expressing concern over federal cuts to the SNAP food stamp program.

Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano said those cuts to New York alone could amount to over $1 billion, and that is troubling.

“They are projecting, and this could trickle down to us, that New York State will face a $1.2 billion deficit in reductions in federal SNAP benefits to New York State,” he said. “That $1.2 billion, I am anticipating will probably be picked up by the state, but that could trickle down to less state aid.”

DeStefano said those federal cuts could begin before the end of this year and continue into the new year.
