BEACON – City Police in Beacon were able disarm a middle school age child who was suicidal and in the process of harming themselves.
The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 1 when police were told that a child with a knife might be at the playground at South Avenue Elementary School.
Officers quickly located the child, whose gender was not disclosed, as they held a knife.
The first officer on the scene told a nearby family member to leave the area for their safety and then began to calmly talk to the child, telling them to put the knife down, which they did.
The officer checked the child to make sure there were no other weapons present and that the child was unharmed.
The child was then transported for mental health assistance.
Beacon Police Chief Thomas Figlia said if anyone is struggling with thoughts of suicide, they should call 911 or the State Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
