NEWBURGH – State Senator Rob Rolison recently honored the man credited with helping the city by repurposing the Newburgh Armory, which has introduced a large number of children to programming and opportunities that would otherwise be unattainable. William “Bill” Kaplan, 98, and his best friend, the late Senator Bill Larkin, helped develop the (NAUC).
Kaplan, barely slowed by his age, visits the center regularly, ensuring it runs smoothly and upholds the facility’s motto, “Prosperity Through Education.”
Kaplan, in 2010, leased the decommissioned armory for $1, with a vision to renovate the basketball courts and create a safe, welcoming haven for Newburgh’s youth. He changed the name to the Newburgh Armory Unity Center and his philanthropic efforts focused on closing economic and cultural divides through programming at the NAUC.
Rolison presented Kaplan with a New York State Senate Proclamation and a Commendation Award in front of Kaplan’s family. The presentation took place in the NAUC’s new children’s library. In presenting the honor, Rolison said, “Bill Kaplan has dedicated his time and generosity to the City of Newburgh and our region for decades. The community has benefited in so many ways, and he always has put Children and Families first,” adding, “I am honored to have his guidance and friendship.”
Kaplan thanked Rolison for the sentiment, but also took the opportunity to provide the senator with background on a new programming initiative.
NAUC provides a facility for other organizations and volunteer groups that need its resources. According to the website, NAUC enables participating organizations to run their own programs using their expertise and collaborates with other programs for the benefit of the community. Following this model, NAUC operates with low overhead.
NAUC is self-supporting and not dependent on Federal or State grants for operating expenses. It derives income from rentals and various events in the indoor field to support public programs. NAUC does require grants for capital expenditures and welcomes private sponsorships for its programs.
