COLD SPRING – The New York State Department of Transportation has rejected an application for a $2.2 million grant to fund the installation of sidewalks along Fair Street between Mayor’s Park and Little Stony Point in the Village of Cold Spring.
Mayor Kathleen Foley told the Village Board the application had been rejected and noted that Fair Street was a county road. Under the proposed funding arrangement, Putnam County would have paid 80 percent of the project cost upfront, with reimbursement from the state. The Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail would have paid the remaining 20 percent.
Foley said the rejection was “sad and disappointing, especially because the DOT had encouraged the village to apply. The only people hurt in this decision are village visitors and residents who have no safe pedestrian access to the trailheads at Little Stony Point in the Washburn lot,” she said, adding that the village will meet with DOT officials to discuss how it can strengthen a future application.
Foley added that village officials would also continue exploring other funding opportunities.
