ALBANY – A $125,000 member item secured by State Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D, Hudson) will fund five rectangular rapid flashing beacons and crosswalks in the Village of Wappingers Falls and Town of Poughkeepsie.
The crosswalks are aimed at promoting pedestrian safety and walkability in the populated, high-traffic areas of the two municipalities.
They include West Main Street in the village, Fulton Street near Violet Avenue School and Innis Avenue near the North End bus stop.
“Walkable communities are safe communities,” said Barrett. “But for many of the municipalities in my Assembly district, the cost of building out pedestrian infrastructure and crosswalks is a barrier to adopting a complete streets design that protects walkers, cyclists and drivers alike.”
Barrett worked with Dutchess County Legislator Alix Winsby, Poughkeepsie Town Supervisor Rebecca Edwards, and the County Transportation Council to identify the locations of the crosswalks.
