ROCHESTER – The Town of Rochester in Ulster County has earned Bronze certification through the state’s Climate Smart Communities program, becoming one of 21 municipalities statewide to receive the designation in the latest round of awards announced Sept. 22.
The program, administered by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, recognizes local governments that take steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prepare for climate-related changes and strengthen community resilience.
Municipalities earn certification by completing a series of actions focused on climate planning, sustainability and environmental protection.
Town Supervisor Erin Enouen credited the town’s Climate Smart Communities Task Force, staff and community partners for helping achieve the designation.
“This designation reflects the dedication of everyone working to make the Town of Rochester more sustainable and resilient,” Enouen said.
Enouen also recognized Task Force Coordinator Julie Goldscheid, task force members and current and former Environmental Conservation Commission members and community volunteers who contributed to the effort.
Bronze certification is an initial level of recognition in the Climate Smart Communities program, which was established in 2009. The program provides participating municipalities with guidance and technical assistance as they develop and implement climate-related initiatives.
The town said it plans to build on the certification through projects focused on resource conservation, energy efficiency and climate resilience.
