MONTICELLO – State Assemblywoman Paula Kay (D, Rock Hill) is opposing Verizon’s proposal to discontinue copper-based phone service, saying those landlines are vital in areas that have little to no cell service in Sullivan County.

Verizon says as part of its transition to more advanced technologies, services will be delivered using modern wireless, fiber or cable technology where available.

But, because of the mountainous terrain in Sullivan County, Kay says those technologies provide shoddy service, at best.

“It’s not just individuals, emergency services, some people’s alarms are keyed to their landlines, so we need get a lot of questions answered by Verizon, and that’s the purpose of both of these forums,” she said. The public needs to raise their voices to let federal regulators know that everyone needs to communicate, especially when there is an emergency.

Kay said Verizon officials will be at her two forums – one on Friday, October 30 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Middletown City Hall, and the other, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 5 at Tarry Brae Golf Course in South Fallsburg.
