London — Princess Diana’s famous black silk dress, known around the world as her “revenge dress,” is being displayed by Sotheby’s ahead of its scheduled auction in New York this December.

Diana wore the striking gown in 1994, the same evening a television interview aired in which her then-husband, now King Charles III, admitted that he had been unfaithful. The dress was created by designer Christina Stambolian and had been ordered by Diana three years before she ultimately wore it.

The gown has previously been sold at auction. In 1997, it was included in a sale of Diana’s clothing that raised money for charity.

Sotheby’s has placed an estimated value of $150,000 to $300,000 on the dress for the upcoming auction. However, experts expect the final sale price could be significantly higher.

The auction is set for December 9, and Sotheby’s said that part of the proceeds will benefit charity.
