HOLLYWOOD — Keanu Reeves is officially stepping back into the world of John Wick, but this time, the legendary assassin’s story will unfold through animation.

The 62-year-old actor will reprise his iconic role in Lionsgate’s upcoming animated prequel, which will explore the origins of the hitman and revisit one of the franchise’s most significant events.

According to Variety, the movie will focus on the Impossible Task, the nearly impossible mission John Wick completed by killing all his rivals in a single night. Accomplishing the assignment allowed him to free himself from his obligations to the High Table and pursue a life with the woman he loved, Helen.

The animated project will be directed by Shannon Tindle, whose previous credits include Kubo and the Two Strings and Ultraman: Rising. Ryan and Kaz Firpo are responsible for writing the screenplay.

When the project was initially announced, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson expressed enthusiasm about bringing the story to animation.

“In both animation and the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless. And there is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the ‘Impossible Task,’” Fogelson previously stated.

He also praised Tindle’s interpretation of the story, describing it as an incredible approach and expressing excitement about seeing the character brought to life through animation.

The animated prequel is just one of several projects planned for the expanding John Wick franchise. With the series having generated more than $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue, additional installments and spin-offs are expected.

Lionsgate is also working on a fifth John Wick film. Meanwhile, a separate movie centered on assassin Caine, portrayed by Donnie Yen, is also in development.
