LOS ANGELES — Apple TV+’s “Widow’s Bay” emerged as the leading winner at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, taking six awards during Monday’s telecast and bringing its total for the year to 14 Emmys.

The series won Outstanding Comedy Series, along with acting honors for Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn. It also received awards for writing and directing, with Katie Dippold winning for comedy writing and Hiro Murai taking the directing prize.

The 14 total awards set a new record for a comedy series in a single Emmy season, surpassing the 13 won by Apple TV’s “The Studio” last year. “Widow’s Bay” had collected eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies before the main telecast.

Rhys also made Emmy history. He became the first actor to win two lead acting awards in the same year, receiving Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for “Widow’s Bay” and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s “The Beast in Me.”

The other major awards included HBO Max’s “The Pitt” winning Outstanding Drama Series, while Noah Wyle won lead actor in a drama for the series. Rhea Seehorn won lead actress in a drama for Apple TV’s “Pluribus.”
