NEWBURGH – Owners of small businesses in Newburgh are urging city officials to move forward with a study to determine the feasibility of creating a Downtown Business Improvement District.

A number of shop owners urged the city council Monday night to use a grant secured two years ago to conduct a study.

City businesswoman Michele Bash said a BID would provide significant help for shops.

“The BID will allow us to get grants from the state as did Buffalo, and they redid a whole area; Poughkeepsie, Middletown, why not us?” she asked.

Councilwoman Romona Monteverde wants to push the concept forward.

“We need to do whatever we can do as a council to help our small businesses survive, because I know it is extremely difficult right now,” she said.

Businesses within a BID district are taxed to increase services like garbage pickup and security, among other things.
