Hunter Biden’s assertions about the origin of his laptop data, his foreign business dealings and whether he traded on access to his father are being challenged by media reports, congressional records, prior testimony and commentators following his lengthy interview with Tucker Carlson.

Hunter Biden’s account of the laptop controversy and his overseas business dealings is facing renewed scrutiny after the former president’s son made a series of claims during a two-hour interview with journalist Tucker Carlson that critics say conflict with documentary evidence, congressional findings and previous testimony.
Among the assertions drawing attention is Biden’s denial that he left a laptop at The Mac Shop in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2019. Podcast host Steven Crowder challenged that account on social media, pointing to a repair receipt bearing Biden’s signature for three MacBook Pro computers and noting that Biden’s own attorneys have not denied that he dropped off the devices.
Crowder also disputed Biden’s timeline involving Ukraine and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Biden claimed Ukraine had been attempting to shop the laptop material to Giuliani as early as 2018. Crowder argued that the chronology does not support that assertion.
“This timeline is flat out wrong. Yes, Lev Parnas claims Ukraine told him about the laptop in February 2019, BUT with zero corroborating evidence. And Parnas himself is on record saying that any Hunter-related evidence didn’t surface in Ukraine until May 2019,” Crowder wrote in a social media post.
The Gateway Pundit separately challenged Biden’s account of the Giuliani timeline, citing contributor Larry Johnson, who it said was directly involved in events surrounding the laptops and has publicly described his chronology of what occurred.
Another point of dispute involved Andriy Derkach, whom Biden described as a Russian military intelligence agent. Biden alleged Giuliani met with Derkach in 2018. Crowder countered that the two did not meet until December 2019 and said their discussion concerned the Biden-Poroshenko tapes rather than Hunter Biden’s laptops.
Those tapes relate to then-Vice President Joe Biden’s dealings with former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. Joe Biden has publicly recounted threatening to withhold $1 billion in U.S. assistance unless Ukraine removed Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, who was investigating matters involving Hunter Biden.
“Well, son of a bitch, he got fired,” Joe Biden later said of the episode.
Hunter Biden also told Carlson that his emails, text messages, voicemails, photographs and videos had been “hacked” from cloud servers, another claim that has been challenged by evidence introduced in court.
During a 2024 trial, an FBI agent testified that the serial number of a 13-inch MacBook Pro provided to authorities by the owner of the Delaware computer repair shop matched a device belonging to Biden.
Questions surrounding Hunter Biden’s foreign business relationships also resurfaced after he told Carlson, “I did not trade on access.”
The New York Post contrasted that statement with several documented interactions involving Joe Biden and his son’s business associates.
“He [Hunter] brazenly insisted, however, that ‘I did not trade on access’ — despite convening two dinners at Georgetown’s Cafe Milano with his dad and his Kazakhstani, Russian and Ukrainian patrons, as well as a coffee at Georgetown’s Four Seasons hotel with Chinese business associates, to whom he later threatened his father’s wrath if a payment was not made,” the Post reported.
The House Committee on Ways and Means also released documents in September 2023 that the committee said showed Hunter Biden was “selling access to the White House” by facilitating meetings involving business partners from China, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
During his interview with Carlson, Biden went further, arguing that the laptop material contained no evidence of wrongdoing beyond his drug use. He said the contents did not show a “single thing of criminal activity other than use of drugs.”
Carlson did not challenge that assertion during the interview.
Hunter Biden ultimately pleaded guilty to tax offenses involving more than $1 million connected to income from international business relationships that were also discussed in laptop material. Questions were additionally raised over whether his foreign activities should have required registration as a foreign agent.
The renewed examination of Biden’s comments came as another development involving past federal investigations into the Biden family emerged Wednesday.
Journalist John Solomon reported that the FBI conducted a clandestine operation that discounted information from some of its own informants concerning alleged Biden family corruption.
The report was based on U.S. intelligence agency records released Wednesday by the White House Government Transparency Task Force.
According to the material described by Solomon, the FBI secretly designated government officials including former Attorney General Bill Barr and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as potential “conduits” for Russian propaganda.
Former Justice Department official Jeff Clark subsequently posted his own breakdown of the disclosures on social media.
The laptop controversy has followed Hunter Biden and his father for years, but the Carlson appearance brought many of the disputed claims back into public view as Biden offered his own version of how the material emerged and what it demonstrated.
Biden discussed the controversy during his appearances this week while also speaking more broadly about his family and national politics.
On Tuesday, he spoke with a TMZ reporter about his father’s health, Joe Biden’s political legacy, the possibility of President Donald Trump seeking a third term and other issues. Video of that exchange was shared online.
His full conversation with Carlson is available through “The Mark Joseph Show” podcast page, while the complete Biden-Carlson interview can also be viewed here.
The competing accounts leave several of Hunter Biden’s central claims from the interview under dispute, particularly his explanation of how the laptop material was obtained, the chronology involving Giuliani and Ukraine, whether his business activities relied on access to Joe Biden and whether the files documented conduct extending beyond his acknowledged drug use.
