French authorities are investigating whether terrorism played a role in a knife attack that wounded two municipal police officers Monday evening in Toulouse, where the suspect was reportedly heard shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the confrontation.
The male and female officers were conducting a foot patrol on Rue d’Austerlitz in the Wilson district when the suspect approached them carrying multiple knives, according to Times Now.
“Two municipal police officers were stabbed Monday evening during an attack in central Toulouse, France, authorities said. The two officers, a man and a woman, were on foot patrol on Rue d’Austerlitz in the Wilson district when they were attacked by a man armed with several knives.”
“According to reports cited by local authorities, the suspect was carrying three knives.”
Accounts of the confrontation said the man first gestured toward the officers before moving toward them and attacking. Some reports said he was carrying two knives, while others indicated that he had three.
“The attacker allegedly approached the officers after gesturing toward them and then lunged at them with a knife. Reports said he targeted the male officer’s throat during the assault. Both officers sustained injuries, including wounds to their arms, but the injuries were described as minor.”
Material from the incident was also circulated through an X post, along with an image from the reported attack and an alternate-size version of the image.
Toulouse Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc said the suspect made remarks that prompted authorities to examine a possible terrorist motive.
FirstPost reported:
“Toulouse Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc said that two police personnel were attacked with a bladed weapon while on duty in the Rue d’Austerlitz neighborhood of the city. He said the attacker ‘made statements of a terrorist nature’.”
“Statements of a terrorist nature were also reported. The two officers were taken to Rangueil University Hospital. The perpetrator was quickly arrested’, said Moudenc without providing further details.”
The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the attack. The two wounded officers were transported to Rangueil University Hospital, and their injuries were described as minor.
Reports also said the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the confrontation. Authorities had not provided further details in the supplied reports about the suspect’s identity or established a motive, and the episode was being examined as a possible terrorist attack.
The Toulouse incident followed another knife attack in Paris nearly two weeks earlier in which a man was arrested after attacking three women with kitchen knives.
“The attack comes nearly two weeks after a man was arrested in Paris for attacking three women with kitchen knives. Knife attacks have emerged as a common method used by radicals in Europe as guns are tightly regulated while knives are readily accessible.”
