The Baltimore Orioles made a major swing for the fences on Monday at the MLB trade deadline. Adley Rutschman was traded to the Boston Red Sox. One of the primary pitchers that Baltimore acquired in the trade was right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson. He was the Red Sox’s second-ranked prospect. Now, he is the Orioles number one ranked prospect.

There was no doubt that Baltimore needed some key pitchers in their farm system. The Orioles also got Kyle Witherspoon from the Red Sox as well. Eyanson was just pitching in the Future’s Game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a few weeks ago for the Red Sox organization. Things change fast and Boston paid a step price for this.

Eyanson was pitching for the Portland Sea Dogs in Double-A before being traded. Now, he will be reporting to the Double-A Affiliate of the Orioles which is the Chesapeake Bay Sox. He is only 21 years old and was a third-round selection (87th overall pick) in the 2025 MLB Draft by Boston. It will be interesting to see how he will continue to progress in his development with Baltimore’s organization.

Eyanson pitched for the Greenville Drive in High-A and also the Sea Dogs this season in Double-A. In 16 games played, he has pitched in 68.1 innings and has given up 35 hits and 11 runs. Eyanson has walked 26 batters and has struck out 94 batters. His WHIP is 0.89.

He is projected to reach the MLB in 2027. Eyanson is 6’2″ and weighs 208 lbs. Some of the scouting report on MLB.com with him is as follows,

“Eyanson’s best pitch is a tight mid-80s slider that beats up lefties and righties alike, and he can use it to get chases or swing and misses in the strike zone. His feel to spin extends to an upper-70s curveball with significant downer break that grades as a plus pitch at its best. He threw more breaking balls than fastballs last spring and has continued to do so this year, but his heater has gone from operating at 92-93 mph and touching 98 at LSU to parking at 95-96, touching 100 and showing improved carry in pro ball.
After barely utilizing a changeup at LSU, Eyanson has made some progress with a mid-80s splitter that he’s still learning to land for strikes. He’s athletic and fills the strike zone, and his immediate dominance earned him an early-May promotion to Double-A. He turned pro with the ceiling of a No. 3 starter and now looks like he can exceed that.”

He has a chance to be the next great LSU Tigers in the big leagues in the future since Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was a major mistake for the Red Sox to trade Eyanson for Rutschman. He is going to be a future ace no doubt. The Orioles got their future ace and the Red Sox may need to find another one soon in the minors.
