NORTH HIGHLANDS – A family in Philipstown’s North Highlands section was safely evacuated Wednesday morning after floodwater and swift-moving water surrounded their home.

Calls to the 9-1-1 Center in Carmel sent North Highlands Fire Department personnel to the scene off Route 9, and according to the department’s President Joseph Hyatt, when responders arrived and realized the seriousness of the situation, requests were made for a front-end loader from the town’s highway department and that allowed the first responders to reach the home and remove the family members trapped inside by the swift moving water.

Multiple agencies also responded to assist, including the Putnam Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mahopac Falls Fire Department Dive Team and Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services led by Deputy Commissioner Drew Kinash and Battalion 19 Coordinator Thomas Merrigan.

A New York State Swift Water Rescue Team was dispatched as well.

No injuries were reported during the dramatic rescue.
